The Relationship between Exclusive Breastfeeding and Stunting in Toddlers

Abstract

Introduction: One of the nutritional problems experienced by toddlers in Indonesia today is stunting. Stunting is a physical growth disorder characterized by a decrease in growth velocity and is the impact of nutritional imbalance. The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is ranked third with the highest cases in Asia. The main factors that cause stunting are family knowledge of nutrition, sanitation, and family support. In addition to the main factors above there are many other factors that cause stunting including low birth weight, education level, exclusive breastfeeding for less than 6 months, and economic status.

Methods: Stunting is a condition of the results of measuring the height of children < -2 based on a z-score or below the median standard of height growth against the age of the World Health Organization. The incidence of stunting is one of the nutritional problems that have an impact on inhibiting mental growth. One of the causes of stunting toddlers is the lack of breastfeeding in toddlers to increase children’s improvement.

Results: The data were obtained based on an analysis of 10 selected articles which showed that exclusive breastfeeding was known to have stunting in toddlers as evidenced by a p-value < 0,005.

One of the causes of stunting toddlers is the lack of breastfeeding in toddlers to increase children’s improvement.
