Abstract

Bullying is associated with physical, psychological, social, and academic problems that may reduce adolescents' health-related quality of life. This study examined bullying occurrence, roles, and types in relation to health-related quality of life among adolescents. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 464 adolescents in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi selected through consecutive sampling. Bullying was measured with a 30-item modified questionnaire, while quality of life was assessed using KIDSCREEN-27. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were applied. Bullying was reported by 320 adolescents (69.0%); 176 (55.0% of those involved) were both perpetrators and victims. Poor quality of life was identified in 336 participants (72.4%). Bullying occurrence, role, and type were associated with quality of life (all p < 0.001), whereas age was not (p = 0.105). Bullying involvement was closely associated with poorer adolescent quality of life. School and family prevention programs should address perpetrators, victims, and adolescents occupying both roles.
