Abstract

Background: Insomnia in adolescents can impair concentration, mood, academic functioning, and daytime productivity. Simple non-pharmacological interventions that can be practiced before sleep are therefore needed. Objective: This study evaluated and compared the effectiveness of ablution therapy and music therapy before sleep in reducing adolescent insomnia. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent-group study involved 38 students with insomnia at a junior high school in Depok. Participants were allocated to classical music therapy or ablution therapy groups, with 19 students in each group. The six-week interventions were monitored through WhatsApp or Google Meet. Insomnia was assessed using the 11-item KSPBJ Insomnia Rating Scale. Marginal homogeneity and Mann-Whitney tests were applied. Results: Both music therapy (p = 0.001) and ablution therapy (p = 0.007) significantly reduced insomnia. After treatment, 78.9% of the music group and 63.2% of the ablution group had no insomnia. However, the between-group difference was not significant (p = 0.349). Conclusion: Both interventions were effective, but neither was statistically superior.
