Abstract

Background: Self care deficits can interfere with hygiene, dressing, eating, and toileting among people receiving mental health care. Objective: To compare self care ability changes after a structured nursing implementation strategy versus routine care. Methods: A two group quasi experimental analysis used 40 synthetic profiles, 20 per group. The sevenday strategy consisted of demonstration, graded practice, activity scheduling, and self review. Ability across four domains was scored from 0 to 16. Results: Mean scores changed from 6.3 ± 2.2 to 12.3 ± 2.3 in the structured strategy group and from 6.5 ± 1.7 to 8.5 ± 2.0 in the comparison group. The between group difference in mean change was 4.0 points. Conclusion: Synthetic profiles show larger improvements after the structured strategy. Effects in actual patients require ethically approved observation with validated measures and follow up.
