Abstract

Introduction: Hand hygiene is one of the most effective strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Nurses have an important role in implementing the five moments of hand hygiene because they frequently interact directly with patients. However, compliance with hand hygiene practices remains a challenge and may be influenced by individual factors, including motivation. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between motivation and nurses’ compliance level with the five moments of hand hygiene in healthcare services. Methods: This study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach conducted in 2023. The sample consisted of 85 nurses selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using motivation questionnaires and observation sheets based on the WHO Five Moments for Hand Hygiene guidelines. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The results showed that 61.2% of nurses had high motivation and 64.7% demonstrated good compliance with the five moments of hand hygiene. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between motivation and nurses’ hand hygiene compliance (p=0.001). Nurses with high motivation had a higher tendency to comply with hand hygiene practices compared with nurses with low motivation. Conclusion: Motivation is significantly associated with nurses’ compliance with the five moments of hand hygiene. Strengthening motivation through education, supervision, and organizational support is necessary to improve hand hygiene compliance.
