The Active Role of Adolescents in Supporting the Indonesia End Tuberculosis Movement: Analysis of the Benefits of Tuberculosis Outreach and Education at a Social Care Home for People with Visual, Hearing, and Speech Disabilities and Development of a Disability-Friendly Tuberculosis Education Website (Ringkas Teratas)

Abstract

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in Indonesia. Accessible education is needed to improve TB knowledge among people with disabilities and their caregivers. This study analyzed the benefits of TB outreach and education at Cahaya Batin Social Care Home in East Jakarta.

Methods: A quantitative study compared knowledge before and after an educational session held on October 29, 2024. Participants comprised 67 residents with disabilities and social care personnel, aged 14–52 years. Data were analyzed descriptively and using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test in Microsoft Excel.

Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 52.5 before education to 87.5 after education. Scores increased in 60 participants, decreased in three, and remained unchanged in four. The manuscript reported a Wilcoxon Z-score of −6.7058. A disability-friendly TB education website, Ringkas Teratas, was developed as a follow-up initiative.

Conclusion: TB outreach and education were associated with improved participant knowledge. Structured, sustainable, and inclusive education should be supported by accessible educational media. The website provides a channel for broader dissemination; its effectiveness was not evaluated in the reported pre-test and post-test assessment.
